Is Your Home One of the 50 Million with Worn Out Electrical Wiring?

This question was posed in a interesting article in the August 2001 issue of Consumer Reports entitled "Your Home Wiring: Is it Safe?" which was reprinted in the January issue of Readers Digest as "Fire in the Wall."

Your home is probably one of your most valuable investments. And, if you are like most Americans, you take good care of it. As soon as you notice your roof needs repaired or walls need painted you put it on your To Do list. Unfortunately, your electrical system is not visible and its neglect can cause you to lose your home, all of your precious memories, and maybe even your life.

Homeowner's often make many mistakes about their electrical system - they take shortcuts. Sometimes they use the wrong wattage light bulb to save a trip to the store or they use extension cords and overuse outlets by plugging in too many devices. Most homeowners continue to demand more electricity from their system, but have not upgraded their electrical service in many years to a system that can handle the demand. The result is often total loss - a sad, but true, reality.

Some homeowners hire a handyman to 'fix' their electrical problems and perform 'upgrades' instead of a licensed, insured, experienced electrician. If you can't afford to do it right, how can you afford to do it over?

Make sure your home is safe. Inspect all of your electrical devices and wiring. Test your GFCI receptacles and smoke detectors regularly.
