About Lighting
Light profoundly affects our moods, our attitude, and our perception of our surroundings.
Good illumination will make the observer feel comfortable and invited, whereas poor lighting creates discomfort and restlessness. Since light and its patterns can have such an incredible psychological impact on our everyday life, it is easy to see why properly lighting a room, building, object, or landscape is more than just putting in various lighting fixtures, scattered hither and yon.
Light creates illusions.
Though its effect is discernible and may be visually arresting, the rays of light are usually invisible. When designers discuss 'light', they are actually talking of the effect light has on a surface or object; such as: soft gradations, shadows & highlights, or sharp definitions caused by direct focus. Light reveals form and can enhance or diminish elements of our surrounding environment.
Lighting is judged by both quantity and quality.
A room can have an abundance of illumination but the focusing and positioning of the light provides hotspots and glare that makes being or working in the space distracting. Quality is based on a number of technical factors. How well color is perceived using the light, the evenness of illumination, and the color temperature of the lighting (whether it feels warm or cool) are all a part of lighting quality.
Varying the intensities of different areas of lights, choosing lighting sources to compliment the colors used in the space, and highlighting areas of interest all contribute in making the surroundings interesting and pleasant.
The difference between a "dark & dreary night" and a "bright, sunny day" depends on the lighting.
