Preliminary Checklist
When commencing any project, it is wise to prepare. A successful lighting project is accomplished through effective communication between the client (you), Lighting Designer, and installation team. As you gather your thoughts in preparation for new illumination, here is a short checklist of crucial areas requiring your attention:
Determine Your Budget
Before contacting a Lighting Designer, you should decide how much you are willing to invest on the completed, installed project. A good designer will create a lighting design within your budget every time. A great designer will also consider extras or enhancements that will make the original design a little better, but are not absolutely necessary for the project. Thus, you ultimately have the choice over the final design and the final investment.
Plan a Timeline
Do you have a special event or occasion by which you would like the project completed? When would you like to begin the project? Discuss all timeliness factors with your Lighting Designer. He will certainly be able to give you a feel for whether your project deadline can be met without cutting corners or sacrificing quality.
Envision Intended Uses for the Space
What types of events, occasions, or uses do you have in mind for the space? Do you expect the space to be used in various different ways or always the same way? It's important that your design complements and intensifies the space as it is used for different reasons.
Prepare a List of Questions
Compile questions, comments, and concerns to present to the Lighting Designer. The more he knows about your imaginations, reservations, inspirations, expectations, and calculations the more likely he is to create a design that is uniquely perfect for you.
