Lighting Frequently Asked Questions
Can't We Just Do the Lighting Design Ourselves?
Sure! Sometimes people like the Do-It-Yourself approach. You need to ask yourself: "Do I Feel Lucky?"
If you are the type of person who would defend yourself in court rather than hiring an attorney, would draft your own plans for constructing a house rather than consulting an architect, and would prefer to perform your own surgery instead of enlisting a medical surgeon... well, then I'm sure you can handle a Lighting Design too.
Otherwise, a certified Lighting Designer with an Electrical Engineering degree and years of experience might just be the type of consultant you need to make the project turn out perfect.
Do You Give Free Estimates?
One of our Lighting Designers would be happy to meet with you for an initial consultation at no charge in order to look at your project, hear your ideas, and tell you a little bit more about our company & our services. At that time, he will review your project budget with you and give you a feel for the type of design that can be accomplished with that budget. Additionally, he will explain our hourly rate structure and billing procedures.
What is the Purpose of a Design Agreement?
Simply put, you are ensuring that you have hired another professional to your team. Instead of trying to sell you some fixtures that are laying around in a warehouse somewhere or to sucker you into falling for the easiest way to complete the job, an Lighting Designer is looking out for you. His design will be based on the parameters you give him and your budget constraints. His goal is to provide you with the absolutely best design using the neatest fixtures and the coolest controls that fit your needs. He's not limited by the lights hanging in a showroom or the controls carried by a favorite manufacturer... no, not at all. If it is available somewhere in the world or can even be imagined, it can be incorporated into your lighting design and presented to you in the design package.
Once I Get this Design, What do I do with It?
It will certainly make for some good reading on a Saturday afternoon... after all, the markets are closed, the Sunday talk shows are a day away, and the theater is better at night anyway. What else can you do with it?....
You can certainly 'shop it around' to various electricians to see who would do the best job of installing it. However, if that doesn't tickle your fancy, we will provide a firm quotation with the design package in case you would prefer us to do the installation for you. We particularly enjoy installing our own designs as it allows us to see the project through to its completion (plus, the Lighting Designer can then tweak the design during installation to make it come out just right).
Are There Really That Many Different Ways to do Lighting?
Wow! Are you kidding? There's up lighting, down lighting, moonlighting, architectural lighting.... then there's ornamental, path, sign, accent, graze, and portrait lighting... Boy, the list goes on and on and on and on. A partial list can be found in the definitions of terms section or you can just ask your friendly neighborhood Lighting Designer.
I'm Dreaming of the Impossible, Can you Do It?
I can hear the music now: "To dream the impossible dream..." from the Musical Man of La Mancha or "Your mission, should you choose to accept it..." from Mission Impossible (but, I digress).
You'd be surprised what we can come up with. We've been known to scale sheer cliffs and climb a 40 foot high tree to make a design turn out just right - and, you should have seen how skinny that tree was! How many times have people thought something was impossible (horseless carriage, telephone, rocketship) and a few short years later they took it for granted (cars, cell phones, space shuttles). I guess what I'm trying to say is "We are professionals, DO NOT try this at home."
How Far Will You Travel?
Although we consider central Pennsylvania our stomping grounds, we have been known to venture outside of the mid-state area for projects that were really COOL. Rather then trying to guess if we will come to where you are, feel free to contact us and we'll let you know.
Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty?
Hmmmm..... Well.... It depends on whether you're pouring or drinking.
